Activity 1: ENERGY
We talked about what "Clean Energy" is:
Using energy sources that are renewable and will not eventually go away.
Examples:
Solar (sun) - has anyone seen a solar farm driving?
Wind - has anyone seen the wind turbines driving?
Water - what do we live by that generates a LOT of powe? FACT: The Niagara generating stations supply one quarter of all power used in New York State and Ontario
Where our energy comes from
Our energy is powered through National Grid.
You can choose how your power is generated (wind power/coal power)
We talked about the ways we can use less energy every day
Turn off lights when not in a room
Use power strips to turn off more than one at a time
Use the washer/dryer/dishwasher at night during "non-peak use" times
Turn off the TV when you are not watching it
Clean the lint filter after every dryer use
Use energy saving light bulbs
Wash with cold water instead of hot water
HOMEWORK
•Go over ways you can save energy with your family and see what you do in your house.
•Turn off the lights EVERY TIME you leave a room
We went over the lifetime of trash and how long it takes for something to breakdown in a landfill
We talked about what is reusing vs. recycling
Recycling is how we take trash and transform it into new products
Reusing means combining reusing materials and using items that can be used in another way
We went over what can and can not be recycled
We made cat scratchers for a local animal shelter out of our cookie delivery boxes to REUSE them
